HOT : Conservatives wave red flags over Obama school speech

t’s pretty straightforward stuff: On Sept. 8, President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver a major speech to American schoolchildren. According to Arne Duncan, the secretary of education, the president will discuss, among other topics, the importance of working hard, and setting educational goals.
“He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens,” Duncanwrote in an open letter last week.
You know, the basics. The kind of things that most kids should know. But the prospect of this speech – which will be broadcast live on the White House’s website – has sent tremors through certain corners of the blogosphere. At issue is a document the Department of Education has created to help teachers drive Obama’s points home. Here’s an excerpt:
Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?
According to commentator Michelle Malkin, the lesson plans have the whiff of subversive activism. “Schools have used students as little lobbyists on everything from illegal immigration to gay marriage to anti-war activism, and most recently, [c]ensus collection,” Malkin wrote. “Will Obama be able to resist issuing a call to youth arms to marshal help in passing his legislative agenda?”
Meanwhile, the conservative radio host Dana Loesch has launched a campaign urging parents to keep their children home on the day of Obama’s speech. In an email urging against the “Socialist Indoctrination of Americas children,” [sic] Loesch explains that Americans must not “mind our Ps and Qs and blindly follow their directives”:
That’s not the manner of governance upon which this country was founded – it is quite the opposite; even the hobbyist Constitutional aficionado appreciates this. So yes, keep your kids home on September 8th and teach them that the power of America rests in the hands of its people, no one else.
As of this afternoon, the email had gone viral, and made the phrase “Obama school speech” one of the most searched on the web.
So is the uproar having an effect? In some cases, the answer is yes. Dallas officials “are leaving the decision to [view Obama’s address] up to individual teachers,” the Houston Chronicle reports. “[P]arents who don’t want their children to see it can opt out. In Houston, each school will decide.”
And in at least one part of Missouri, kids won’t be seeing the speech at all.
For its part, the White House says that conservatives misunderstand the purpose of the address. “The goal of the speech and the lesson plans is to challenge students to work hard in school, to not drop out and to meet short-term goals like behaving in class, doing their homework and goals that parents and teachers alike can agree are noble,” a White House spokesman told FOXNews.com. “This isn’t a policy speech. This is a speech designed to encourage kids to stay in school.”

Chupacabra Pictures Reveal the Chupacabra Found in Texas Might Have Known Origins

Chupacabra pictures of a chupacabra found in Texas back up last year’s chupacabras news. Do these photos really show a chupacabra or just an ugly dog? Is it another Bigfoot hoax? Is el chupacabra found for good? You might be surprised.
Chupacabra Found – A Brief History of Recent News
Cuero, Texas was ground zero for chupacabra pictures in 2007, when a lifelong hunter found an odd piece of roadkill that looked like a hairless dog with metallic blue skin and sizeable fangs. Deeming it to be a chupacabra, the alleged chupacabra pictures – posted on Fox News – pointed
Chupacabra Pictures Reveal the Chupacabra Found Might Have Known Origins
to a 40-pound creature.
Cuero – or Quero – once again made news with chupacabra pictures, when in 2008 a deputy recorded a creature looking like a chupacabra. The dashboard video – posted on CNN – showcases a creature that looks eerily like a mix of dog and coyote that could easily weigh in at more than 40 pounds. At that time, we reported on these findings in the article “Chupucabra Goat Sucker Puts Cryptozoology in the News Spotlight.”
Chupacabra Facts – or Fiction?
Call it chupucabra, chubacabra, or chupa, the recent avalanche of chupacabra pictures makes it hard to doubt that chupacabras are indeed around. The lore surrounding chupacabras suggests that these creatures suck the blood of their prey, usually livestock. Accounts of humans proclaiming a chupacabra found vary, and in some cases the cryptid animal is said to be the size of a bear, while in others it features dinosaur like spikes on its back, hinting toward a more reptilian origin.
Chupacabra Found – It’s a Coyote?
Texas State University reported in 2007 that the chupacabra found in Cuero was actually a coyote. Testing involved DNA sampling, which provided the most surefire way of putting to bed the rumors swirling around the chupacabra pictures.
Is El Chupacabra Little More Than the Mutation of a Common Animal?
Will the same hold true for the Rosenberg, Texas chupacabra found dead in a barn just recently? Again a doglike creature devoid of hair was discovered and before long supposed chupacabra pictures began circulating. As reported by KHOU-TV, the carcass is in the hands of a taxidermist.
Chupacabra Pictures Reveal the Chupacabra Found Might Have Known Origins
It looks remarkably like the chupacabra pictures released over the last few years.
Analysis of the Chupacabra Pictures
At first glance, the number of chupacabra pictures coming out of Texas — and the initial identification of the 2007 specimen as a coyote — makes it highly likely that within the state a mutation of the common coyote has taken place. Perhaps illness, changes in the environment, or other influences causing an alteration of the DNA have caused a number of generations of animals to change to such an extent that their skin color is changed, and their ability to grow fur is compromised.
On the other hand, a chupacabra found in Stilwell, Oklahoma, puts this theory of localized mutation or evolution in question. A chupacabra picture posted by News on 6 shows an animal eerily similar to the chupacabra found in Texas.
Are chupacabras a new breed that is spreading across the United States – or was the chupacabra never more than a mutated coyote in the first place?

HOT : Historical Series - A community bonds together during WWII

Driving around "Front Street" and "Back Street" as a child, Rockford resident Dan Baker remembers "all of the flags."

American flags and special service flags were flown from the porches and hung in the windows of homes around town - homes waiting for loved ones to return from WWII.

"They were about the size of a single sheet of paper," he said of the service flags, which were hung to indicate if a family member was fighting in Europe.

The flags were red with a blue star, or multiple blue stars if more than one person was away at war. And, if someone died, Baker said, the blue star was removed and replaced with a gold one.

"It was a huge blow to the town whenever someone died or was injured," he said. "Everyone knew everyone right in town, so people were always stopping by, baking things and seeing if there was anything they could do."

Dan's twin brother, David Baker, was recently looking through a 1944 edition of The Rockford Register that contained his brother Robert's death notice. Robert Baker was killed in battle at age 22 in Gulpen, Holland in 1944.

David said he could not believe how many Rockford men actually served in WWII.

"I was amazed," said David, who was only 9 years old when the U.S. joined the allied forces.

He said he remembers there were not very many men around town to do work. And a lot of the women he knew had to go out and get jobs, he said, including his mother.

"It definitely changed life," David said. "I don't remember how it changed my life so much - until Bob died. I was such a young whippersnapper."

He said his mom worked doing a number of odd jobs, including working at Sears and Coon, a popular department store that was located at 103 Courtland, where Glik's is today.

Dan Baker said there were only really three areas in Rockford that townsfolk ever referred to: "Front Street," "Back Street" and the "New Addition."

Front Street was Main Street, where Wolverine World Wide was located. Back Street was Monroe Street, which led to the school. Rockford students, kindergarten through 12th grade, were all housed in the same building, which is the Administration Building today.

Dan said the New Addition was a small subdivision of new homes, located along Sigsbee Street, near Old Northland Drive, that developed because of Wolverine. He said many of the families that worked for the Shoe and Tanning Corporation moved there.

David said Wolverine was a key part of life in Rockford back then. Dan added the grocery store and other shop hours were configured around shifts at the shoe factory. He remembers Saturdays were grocery day for the whole town.

"Everyone went down all at once," he said. "You'd see all your neighbors. I remember walking and pulling a wagon home full of groceries."

The Bakers said near the river, behind the Wolverine shoe factory, there was a large lot where rubber shoe scraps were thrown.

"I remember as a young boy going down there with my family to sort through the scraps," Dan said. "There would be 20 to 25 people there at a time."

He said they would tote large, burlap bags and pluck the rubber soles from the pile, sort them and send them away to be reused for tires by the U.S. Army.

"I don't know where we sent them, I just know it was a community event," he said. "Another way we all helped the troops."

NEW : Championships aid Hall of Fame candidacy

I was in Canton, Ohio, last week for a seniors committee meeting of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and visited with a former player whose bust was on display in the building.

He studied the list of candidates under consideration by the seniors committee for the Class of 2010. It was littered with players from losing teams who had been passed over by the selection process.

Then he studied another list of the 260 players enshrined in Canton. He shook his head and said, "There really is a correlation here between these players and championships."

AP
The Green Bay Packers of the 1960s, who won five titles in a seven-year span from 1961-67, are the NFL's top dynasty, writes Rick Gosselin.
The two players we selected as the senior nominees for 2010 were players whose careers had been tainted by team failure – Denver running back Floyd Little and Detroit cornerback Dick LeBeau. Neither played on a championship team. Neither even reached a championship game. Consequently, neither had ever been a finalist for the Hall of Fame.

Little, a five-time Pro Bowler and former NFL rushing champion, waited 34 years to become a finalist for the first time. LeBeau, who retired after the 1972 season third all-time in interceptions and still ranks in the NFL's Top 10, waited 37 years.

That got me to thinking. What is a championship worth to a player's Hall of Fame candidacy? Is there a way to quantify it?

So I started my research with the best team and the best dynasty I've ever seen. In both cases, it's the Green Bay Packers. In my book, the 1962 Packers are the best team and the 1960s Packers the best dynasty, winning five titles in a seven-year span from 1961-67.

The 1962 Packers featured a starting lineup with 10 future Hall of Famers. That seems excessive – even for a team as mighty as those Vince Lombardi Packers. But those 10 Packers from 1962 were also the only Packers enshrined in Canton from that decade. So while 10 may seem bountiful for one team, 10 sounds about right for a franchise that won five championships.

I've been a voter on both the selection committees of the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I think baseball enshrines too few players and football enshrines too many.

But using the 10/5 ratio of the 1960s Packers, I'm going to use two busts in Canton per championship team as my measuring stick. That not only sounds right it feels right. The Hall of Fame should not be the Hall of Good. It should be the Hall of Great.

That said, the most over-represented franchise in Canton is the Rams. Having won two championships, the Rams deserve four Hall of Famers by my measure. They have 10.

The Packers have 19 Hall of Famers, second only to the Chicago Bears. Surprisingly, Green Bay is under-represented in Canton. The Packers have won an NFL record 12 championships, which would entitle them to 24 Hall of Famers. They have only 19.

Both the Cowboys and 49ers are a tad under average. Both won five championships yet both have only nine Hall of Fame players in Canton. But both will reach their quota in 2010 when Jerry Rice becomes the 10th Hall of Famer for the 49ers and Emmitt Smith the 10th for the Cowboys.

Here's the breakdown by franchise of players enshrined in Canton. It lists the number of Hall of Famers, the number of championships and the ratio of Hall of Famers per titles:

Franchise HoF Titles Per title
Rams 10 2 5.0
Miami 8 2 4.0

Schaub a big hit
Now, let's take a spin around the rest of the NFL. I'm off the road now until the start of the season. I was in Houston last weekend spending some time with the Texans and liked what I saw. I see the Texans in contention for a playoff spot this season and QB Matt Schaub in contention for a Pro Bowl spot.

AP
The NFL has fined players $90,000 for illegal hits on Texans quarterback Matt Schaub the last two seasons.
Speaking of Schaub, the rap on him is that he's injury prone. He's missed five games in each of his two seasons as the starting quarterback of the Texans. He's lucky he hasn't missed more time, given the fact he has become the NFL's resident piñata.

The NFL has fined players $90,000 for illegal hits on Schaub the last two seasons:

•Then San Diego CB Drayton Florence $15,000 for a blind-side hit on Schaub in 2007 following an interception;

•Minnesota DE Jared Allen $50,000 for two hits on Schaub at the knees in a 2008 game;

•Tennessee CB Cortland Finnegan $25,000 for two separates hits on Schaub in another 2008 game, one helmet-to-helmet and the other spearing. Both drew penalty flags.

Under the big top
Brett Favre has been one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play in the great outdoors, setting NFL records for passing yards and touchdowns.

Favre moves indoors this season for the first time in his 19-year career as the quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings. But he hasn't fared as well in the air-conditioned comfort of domes as he has the chill of Green Bay.

Favre holds the NFL record for starting quarterbacks with 169 career victories. He is 146-75 outdoors for a winning percentage of .661. Indoors, it's a different story. Favre is 23-25 in his career in domes. He was sacked seven times in a 1996 loss at the Metrodome to the Vikings, he threw six interceptions in a 2001 loss at the Edward Jones Dome to the Rams and generated only three points in a humbling 17-3 loss at Ford Field to the lowly Lions in 2005.

At the Metrodome, Favre is 6-10 in his career. But he's 5-3 in Minneapolis this decade after a disastrous 1-7 showing there in the 1990s.

Here's a look at Favre's career:

Category Games Comp Att % Yards TD INT Rate W-L
Career 273 5,720 9,280 61.6 65,127 464 310 85.4 169-100
Metrodome 16 351 550 63.8 3,792 24 18 84.9 6-10
All domes 48 1,107 1,742 63.5 12,483 87 64 86.2 23-25
Stat of the week
4-0 – Seven NFL teams head into their pre-season finales this weekend with 3-0 records: Baltimore, Green Bay, Miami, Minnesota, New Orleans, San Francisco and Seattle. Miami plays New Orleans, so there can be a maximum of six teams that finish the pre-season with perfect records. Only once in the last 25 years has there been as many as four teams with perfect preseasons – in 2003 when Arizona, Carolina, New England and Tennessee – much less six.

Book review
Nothing Comes Easy, by Y.A. Tittle and Kristine Setting Clark. I picked this one up because I wanted to learn more about one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to come out of Texas. Tittle never won a championship but it didn't keep him out of the Hall of Fame.

AP
The name Y.A. Tittle ususally conjures up this famous image. But Tittle was the first quarterback in NFL history with back-to-back 30-touchdown seasons in 1962-63.
The Marshall product spent three years in the old American Football Conference before embarking on his NFL career in 1951, spending 14 seasons with the 49ers and Giants. He became the first quarterback in NFL history with back-to-back 30-touchdown seasons in 1962-63 and was the league MVP in 1963.

His best anecdote was when Texas tried to recruit Tittle after he had already committed to LSU. The Longhorns spirited Tittle off to Austin a few weeks before classes were to begin that fall and stashed him in a rooming house off campus with other recruits.

The freshman in the next room was Bobby Layne and the two quarterbacks developed a strong, competitive bond that summer that lasted throughout their pro careers. Tittle returned to LSU before the start of the season, never enrolling at Texas.

"I often wondered what would have happened if I had stayed at Texas in the summer of '44," Tittle wrote in the book. "Maybe pro football would have never heard of me...or perhaps Bobby Layne's career would have been altered. Maybe we would have eliminated each other with our competitiveness – who knows?"

DVD review
Harvard Beats Yale, 29-29: This DVD revisits the 1968 game between the Ivy League schools – the first time the two met with perfect records since 1909. Yale, with quarterback Brian Dowling and halfback Calvin Hill, ranked 16th in the nation and was the heavy favorite. But Harvard rallied from a 29-13 deficit with 16 points in the final minute for the tie.

Actor Tommy Lee Jones was a guard on the Harvard team and Dowling became the character spoofed as "B.D." in the comic strip Doonesbury. Kevin Rafferty was the writer, director and cameraman of the film.

The video goes through the entire game almost play by play with comments from the principal players of each play. It also tells the tale of two campuses during the Vietnam era, pitting the white-collar Elis against the blue-collar Crimson. The game and comeback were fascinating enough. The story behind the game was even more fascinating.

Two-minute drill
• The Baltimore Ravens did not re-sign 41-year-old placekicker Matt Stover in the off-season, deciding to let youngsters Steven Hauschka and Graham Gano battle it out in training camp for his job. Gano has missed a 28-yarder this pre-season and Hauschka a 27-yarder – so Stover's phone number remains on speed dial of Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome. "Not having Stover here is a lot like not having Ray [Lewis] here or Jonathan [Ogden]," Newsome said. "He's always been money in the bank for us."

• I can see the Houston Texans keeping four tight ends this season, with draft picks James Casey and Anthony Hill joining holdovers Owen Daniels and Joel Dressen. The Texans have a fifth tight end in their back pocket in Connor Barwin. He caught 31 passes at the University of Cincinnati as a junior tight end in 2007, then moved to defensive end in 2008 where he led the Big East with 12 sacks. No one can stack 'em five deep at tight end like the Texans.

• Attention fantasy footballers: don't get too excited about San Francisco rookie Glenn Coffee leading the NFL in rushing in the preseason. Washington's Marcus Mason led the NFL in rushing last preseason but the Redskins didn't even break camp with him, releasing him in the final roster cut to 53. Mason spent time on the practice rosters of the Ravens and Jets but did not touch the ball a single time in the 2008 regular season.

• With the retirement of LB Tedy Bruschi this week, only two players remain from New England teams that started all four Super Bowls this decade – QB Tom Brady and OT Matt Light.

• The Eagles have quietly been shopping veteran wide receivers Reggie Brown and Hank Baskett this summer.

Final thought
All the noise in the NFC North this summer has been generated by the quarterbacking acquisitions of Brett Favre by the Minnesota Vikings and Jay Cutler by the Chicago Bears. But don't be surprised if Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers wind up winning the division.

NEW : High Schooler Makes Life Saving Tackle

It's American Hero Day on Deadspin! A high school defensive end in Mississippi saved the lives of his classmates when a 14-year-old girl pulled out a gun on his school bus....and he tackled her and took the gun away.

I mean, this kid is right up there with Curt Schilling, Tony Romo, Jay Cutler, David Wright, the Pantless Purdue Brigade, and all the other American legends who have thrown themselves in front of fastballs and bikini models so that the rest of us could have a better life. They don't do it for the glory people. Kaleb Eulls did it because he didn't want to see his little sister and all his friends get shot. But I'm sure the other guys had their reasons too.

Kaleb's going to play at Mississippi State next year and that is its own sort of reward, I guess. It's not something cool like free Pirates tickets or anything, but I'm sure it will have its moments.

HOT : Curt Schilling Potentially Pitches Himself as Kennedy Successor

According to an interview Schilling conducted with NECN’s Brad Puffer, he says he has been contacted by people whose opinions he respect and has listened to the idea of getting into the race.
The World Series winning right-hander is a committed Republican whoendorsed and campaigned for George W. Bush in 2004 and Sen. John McCain in 2007.

Mr. Schilling provided a hearty laugh in the interview when asked if he was considering a run.  He then went on to say he doesn’t know right now if he will take the plunge.  “I have a lot on my plate so as of today, probably not.  I don’t know going forward.  That is a pretty big deal from a commitment standpoint.  I’m not even going to speculate on it right now,” said Schilling.
Gov. Deval Patrick announced the January 19, 2010 special election earlier this week and candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties are beginning to make their intentions known.  Mr. Schilling conceded that he would need to make a decision quickly.
The Alaska native, who played for the Philadelphia Phillies in the early days of his career, came to play for the Red Sox in 2004 and officially retired from the game earlier this year.  If he decides to get into the Senate race, he’ll be doing so in an overwhelmingly Democratic state.
In the NECN interview, Mr. Schilling said that the United States of America is in a “really really bad place, not just domestically, but abroad.”  He pointed to the Bay State as home to the “Big Dig,” which he labeled a colossal waste of money.
“That is probably another one of the reasons why I wouldn’t make a good political candidate right now is that there is an enormous amount of house cleaning that has to be done and I don’t have a really good filter,” Schilling said.
“My first press conference could be my last,” he added.
Mr. Schilling said he dedicates a lot of time and attention to 38 studios, his gaming business, and if he believes he can divert his time and energy away from that, he may consider the Senate race.
“There is a possibility that I might think about it.  I don’t know,” he said.
After the NECN interview, Schilling posted this update on his blog: “While my family is obviously the priority, and 38 Studios is a priority, I do have some interest in the possibility. That being said to get to there, from where I am today, many many things would have to align themselves for that to truly happen. I am not going to comment further on the matter since at this point it would be speculation on top of speculation.”
“My hope is that whatever happens, and whomever it happens to, this state makes the decision and chooses the best person, regardless of sex, race, religion or political affiliation, to help get this state back to the place it deserves to be.”
