NEW : Worth the Drive: Orange International Street Fair

Getty Images
Isn't downtown Orange one of the most awesomest, charmingest, walk-around-iest spots in all of Southern California? And don't even start us on that picturesque roundabout. We're mad for a good roundabout.
If the thought of a roundabout is putting you in mind of overseas trips you've taken, you're in the right mental frame for the Orange International Street Fair. But then, we're always in the right mental frame for a sprawling spectacular devoted to foods of the world. We don't even need to be roundabout-adjacent to get a craving for pizza and gyros and tacos and... and.... And repeat.
The Fair sizzles up the savory stuff for three days -- Friday, September 4th through Sunday, September 6th -- and whatever day you arrive, prepare to stroll. There are whole sections of downtown Orange given over to various countries, and there will be a lot to take in before you land on the three, four, five things you want to eat. Look for the banners hanging above the streets. They're helpful.
Probably studying this map before you go is a good idea. Then you can play the know-it-all, bossy-boss with your friends. They love that.
There's other stuff going down around Orange, entertainment, dance, soak-in-the-close-of-summer activities. You need some place to shake your thing between the calamari and the sausages, so make for the music stages.

NEW : Massage therapist happy in new profession

Losing her job in her mid-50s could have been a nightmare, but it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to Nancy Zetes, owner of one of West Salem’s newest businesses — Touch of Country Therapeutic Massage at 305 W. Jefferson St.

After six years as a forklift operator at the Company Store in La Crosse, Zetes found herself out of a job in 2005 when the distribution center was moved to Virginia.

Understandably, there were some anxious moments. “I’d lost my job and my life insurance,” recalled Zetes. “I was worried. Who would hire me at my age?”

Through Workforce Connections, however, Zetes got funding to go back to school to train for a new career. She chose a new one-year program in massage therapy at Western Technical College and became one of the program’s first graduates in 2006.

She has become a big proponent of changing careers. “If anyone tells you that you can’t change at your age, you send them to me,” she said.

Zetes is clearly delighted with her new career as a massage therapist. “I always wanted to do something that helped people. I wanted more than forklift driving,” Zetes said. “This is the best thing that could have happened to me — now I can do what I love 24-7.”

Business has been good. In fact, it’s been better than Zetes expected. “It’s been wonderful so far — I’ve been very busy,” she said.

Zetes business plan called for her to start her own business within six months of graduation. She did it in three, setting up her first shop at Keyway Leather in Barre Mills. “I want to thank Dave at the leather shop and all who supported me and showed confidence in me,” Zetes said.

Perhaps the person who showed the most confidence in Zetes is Duane Kendhammer of West Salem. “I met him as a client, but he became my public relations man,” recalled Zetes. “He told people about me and took my brochures out to restaurants and businesses. He deserves so much credit.”

In May, Zetes bought a house in West Salem and recently moved her business there. It’s the first house she’s ever owned. “I lived in a trailer park on the south side of La Crosse for 35 years,” she said.

The new house was also part of her business plan. “I gave myself five to 10 years after starting my business to buy a home, but I did it in three,” she said. “My dream was to find a house to serve my needs.”

Zetes, who grew up on a farm in Chipmunk Coulee south of La Crosse, said she specifically looked to buy a house in West Salem because her clients come from all over the Coulee Region and the village is easily accessible.

“I love it here!” she said. “It’s wonderful, everything is in walking distance, the people are so friendly, my neighbors are nice and it’s quiet.”

At first, Zetes thought her house’s proximity to the railroad tracks might bother some of her clients but that hasn’t been the case. “With the soft music playing, some of them have even fallen asleep to the sound of the train passing,” she said.

Putting in a garden will be one of the first priorities in any spare time Zetes has — she’s currently seeing clients from 9 a.m until 6 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Asked what was the best part of her job, Zetes had a quick reply: “Seeing people walk out of here with relief.”

She noted that one of her daughters recently graduated from Western and is going on for training in autism and speech pathology. Another daughter is a registered nurse, and her son is training to be a pharmacist.

“We all enjoy helping people — it’s the only way to live,” she said. “I’m not here to get rich —I’m here to help people.”

Zetes said once people get beyond the stigma of massage being just for pleasure, they realize how helpful it can be. Chiropractic adjustments, for example, can be made much easier if muscle tension has been relieved.

“Massage therapy helps more people than it’s given credit for,” Zetes said.

Massage is not the only thing Zetes offers at Touch of Country. “I’ve got a Hothouse machine, a Chi machine and an electroflux energizer. They help detoxify and energize bodies,” she said. The Hothouse machine uses infrared heat to get deep into tissue. The Chi machine —sometimes called the “fish machine” — relaxes muscles with a gentle swaying motion.

“People ask ‘What is it?’ I say ‘Try it once,’” Zetes said. “So far, my clients have loved everything I’ve added in.”

Zetes plans an open house soon but doesn’t know the exact date yet. “I want people to come in and see what I have to offer,” she said.

As far as long-range plans as she gets older, she would like to do more fishing and spend more time with her grandchildren. But that doesn’t mean she won’t continue to educate herself on the latest developments in massage therapy.

“I want to do this for the rest of my life,” she said. “I’m the kind of person who, when they want something, they go after it —there’s no stopping me!”

NEW : How to shop for free at Walgreens

You probably are familiar with Walgreens for things like prescriptions. However, did you know that it is possible to shop there for free? That's right without spending any money out of your pocket you can walk away with a weekly assortment of products. All for free! You may have seen my other article about shopping for free at CVS. I personally find Walgreens a little more challenging, but the end result is the same. Free products!

Instructions :

  1. Step1
Begin by stopping by your local Walgreens and grabbing The Walgreens EasySaver catalog. This is the Walgreen's rebate booklet and can be found right adjacent to the door. While there also grab the weekly store flier. If you would prefer you can look at both of these online so that you have a plan when you get the store.
  2. Step2
Now you are going to need a few minutes to look through this. I recommend those chairs over by the pharmacy. What you are looking for is the free after rebate items. In addition make note of the other rebate items. If you have any coupons (I'll provide a link below to monthly coupon mailers)you may be able to use your coupons to make one of the items cost less than the rebate amount. Another possibility is that the other rebate items will go on sale during the month such that they are free after rebate.
  3. Step3
Now find any coupons you have for the items you are going to purchase. Coupons are available in the store fliers, or look at the references below. Also, because those are store coupons you can stack them, which means using them with manufacturers coupons for added savings discount. For example if you have a coupon for an item which is free after rebate, you can actually make money by buying that item at the reduced cost but getting the full cost back as a rebate.
  4. Step4
Now, what you need to do is go get whatever items you have chosen for the first week. Since you will be paying out of pocket for your first transaction I recommend either starting out small or with items you want anyway.
  5. Step5
Now when you are ready to pay give the store your coupons in this order:
1)Register rewards (coupons that work like money that sometimes print off on the bottom of the receipt)
    2)Manufacturers coupons
    3)Store coupons
  6. Step6
Now you will need to send your receipt with the price circled and the rebate form to the address listed. Chose to receive the rebate as a store gift card. By choosing that option you will get an extra 10% added on to the amount. This should help cover tax, an envelope, stamp, plus maybe even put you a little ahead.
  7. Step7
The first time it takes 4-6 weeks to get your gift card with rebate, however after that each rebate only takes two weeks or so and will be automatically added on to your gift card. So, if you choose to wait until your gift card arrives then the only time you should have to pay out of pocket should be with your first transaction.
  8. Step8
If you would also like to try shopping for free at CVS check out my other article in resources.

NEW : Oregon's Blount suspended for season

5:02 p.m. -- From Boise State coach Chris Petersen:
“The event that took place last night following our game between Byron and Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount was very unfortunate and we do not condone Byron’s action. There will be disciplinary consequences for Bryon as a result of the incident last night and they will be handled internally.”
Hout will not be suspended, Petersen said.
3:31 p.m. -- A little more clarification on Blount's status from an Oregon press release:
Blount will continue to have access to all of the university’s support services provided to all student-athletes, will be allowed to take part in all team activities, including practice with the team, and will be held accountable to all team rules and regulations. However he will not be allowed to participate in any games.
2:40 p.m. -- Oregon has suspended senior running back LeGarrette Blount for the rest of the season, including a potential bowl game, for punching Boise State defensive end Byron Hout on Thursday night, Chip Kelly announced Friday.
Kelly said Blount is allowed to remain with the program.
Blount punched Hout in the jaw with a right cross moments after the Broncos' 19-8 victory Thursday night. Hout said something to Blount and tapped him on the shoulder, prompting Blount to turn around and punch him.
"It's the incident. You can't hit somebody in society, whether they called you a name or not," Kelly said. "In society, no matter what happens you can't do that."
Kelly refused to say what Blount told him Hout said.
"I don't want to get into that," Kelly said.
Kelly said he cried when telling Blount of his punishment and that Blount cried as well.
Athletic director Mike Bellotti, who was the team's football coach until March, said he supported Kelly's decision.
"We don't believe he deserves to represent the university on the field anymore," Bellotti said.
12:42 p.m. -- Boise State had another huge victory overshadowed Thursday night, continuing a trend for the Broncos.
— The 2007 Fiesta Bowl victory against Oklahoma was (somewhat) overshadowed by Ian Johnson’s postgame wedding proposal.
— The 2008 regular-season win at Oregon, Boise State’s first road win against a BCS-conference team, was overshadowed by two late hits.
— Thursday night’s dominant victory against Oregon has now been overshadowed by the actions of Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount.
The new press box at Bronco Stadium was filled to capacity for the game and had Blount not gone postal — and you can certainly criticize Bronco defensive end Byron Hout for instigating things — then most of that media would have been writing about how Boise State cemented its status as a BCS contender.
Instead, most of the commentary is about Blount.
Kelly’s future
Also lost in the uproar over Blount’s actions was the actions of Oregon AD Mike Bellotti, the former football coach who resigned in March to take the AD job.
Bellotti went down to the field in the second quarter to talk to first-year coach Chip Kelly and then conducted an interview with ESPN in which he was second-guessing the playcalling.
Kelly’s team looked completely overwhelmed and there was dissention on the sideline as well. Bellotti’s actions certainly don’t help Kelly to establish any sort of authority over this squad.
Imagine having your boss come to your first big meeting with your employees and basically tell you that you're conducting the meeting all wrong.
Chris Petersen realizes how good he has it. You would never see Gene Bleymaier undermining Petersen like that on national television.

NEW : Oregon Football Player LeGarrette Blount Punch Video - Byron Hout Floored

Byron Hout was floored by a sucker punch that was caught on video and broadcast in high definition by ESPN as Oregon Football Player LeGarrette Blount landed the punch after the game was over.  While most thought the score was settled with a Boise State victory 19-8 over the Oregon Ducks, Blount's late punch said otherwise.

Oregon Football Player LeGarrette Blount Punch Video - Byron Hout Floored
Oregon Football Player LeGarrette Blount Punch Video - Byron Hout Floored

On the film clip you can see Byron Hout go up to LeGarrette Blount and pop him on the shoulder pads and say something to the Oregon player.  He answers with an (expletive) you! and then lays a hard right hand square on the jaw sending the defensive end to his knees!  Hout already had removed his helmet and it is a boxer like punch, complete with a bit of spit flying out of the Boise State player's mouth.

***

He isn't knocked out though as he gets back up. That starts the back and forth and it eventually seems to be between Blount and one entire end of the stadium.  He looked out of control and had to be restrained by security and coaches as he seemed to want to go into the stands and fight some of the fans that were raining taunts on the player.  ESPN has the video here.

Should he be suspended for the year?  He apologized immediately.  "It was just something that I shouldn't have done," said Blount, who had eight carries for a loss of five yards. "I lost my head."

NEW : AP photo of dying Marine draws fire from Pentagon

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has condemned the Associated Press decision to release a photograph of a US Marine wounded during a battle in the Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. The Marine, Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Bernard of New Portland, Maine, was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade in a Taliban ambush on Aug. 14. He later died of his wounds.
In the AP photograph, Bernard is pictured lying on his side on a sandy slope. The image is blurry, but Bernard appears to be bleeding; two other Marines stand over him, attending to his wounds. The caption, titled “Afghanistan Death of a Marine,” identifies the location as the village of Dahaneh. The photographer is Julie Jacobson, who also took the image at the top of this post. The AP reports that Bernard later died on the operating table at a nearby field hospital.
“AP journalists document world events every day. Afghanistan is no exception,” Santiago Lyon, the wire services’ director of photography, said in a statement. “We feel it is our journalistic duty to show the reality of the war there, however unpleasant and brutal that sometimes is.” In a story on the ambush, the AP reported that Bernard’s death came during the “deadliest month of the deadliest year since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
According to the AP, Bernard’s parents had twice asked the image not be released.
Fallout
“I cannot imagine the pain and suffering Lance Corporal Bernard’s death has caused his family,” Gates wrote in a letter to Thomas Curley, AP’s president and chief executive officer. “Why your organization would purposefully defy the family’s wishes knowing full well that it will lead to yet more anguish is beyond me. Your lack of compassion and common sense in choosing to put this image of their maimed and stricken child on the front page of multiple American newspapers is appalling. The issue here is not law, policy or constitutional right – but judgment and common decency.”
The leader of the largest veterans association in the US has also criticized the AP’s decision, Reuters reports.
“The lack of compassion and common decency shown by the Associated Press in releasing this photograph is stunning,” said American Legion National Commander Clarence E. Hill, a retired Navy captain. “Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard is a hero who gave his life for his country. His family is understandably offended.”
White House responds to anger over Obama school speech
“I think we’ve reached a little bit of the silly season when the President of the United States can’t tell kids in school to study hard and stay in school,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters.

HOT : Van Jones Again: Is he Toast?

Now, finally, some of the mainstream media has picked up the story. Yesterday, Jake Tapper of ABC News blogged on the Jones appointment. Fox News put various statements made by Jones on their website. Finally, TNR ran an article on its website by Kate Sheppard, which both called attention to Jones while ridiculing the entire brouhaha.
Sheppard’s piece is an example of particularly flawed argument. First, she writes that “for months now, various right-wing bloggers and Glenn Beck have been trying to whip up outrage over Van Jones, Obama’s green-jobs guru. Their feverish accusations to date—that he’s a secret communist, say—have been absurd and easily ignored.”
I used to have a saying: “Just because J.Edgar Hoover said it doesn’t mean it isn’t true.”  Today, I would have to add that because Beck has first brought it to the nation’s attention, also doesn’t mean it’s not true. It turns out, of course, that Jones’ record and background is not only fair game, but that the reports about him are true. He was a proclaimed communist and Maoist, and has publicly said that today he is adopting new strategies to achieve his radical and anti-capitalist goals.  And that is why, Sheppard is forced to say, he is becoming a “political headache” for the White House.
Sheppard tries to legitimize Jones by pointing to how many national liberal leaders have endorsed him, from Nancy Pelosi on. The real question, of course, is why they have done this? It is akin to the question I asked in the pages of TNR in the 1980’s, when the peace movement was at its hilt, and I asked how they expected to be taken seriously when they accepted the participation of Soviet line Communists. The major liberal summits that featured Jones as a keynoter, and on which she reports, should be embarrassed at their willingness to feature someone with Jones’ views.
Sheppard should start by reading the analysis on Frontpagemag.com by Ben Johnson, if she can stand to read a sound argument, even though it comes from a conservative source. Johnson lays out with direct and accurate quotes from Jones what he believes, and how he intends to use his green jobs position as a vehicle for a clearly left-wing socialist agenda.
Here is the key Jones quote:
Right now we say we want to move from suicidal gray capitalism to something eco-capitalism where at least we’re not fast-tracking the destruction of the whole planet. Will that be enough? No, it won’t be enough. We want to go beyond the systems of exploitation and oppression altogether. But, that’s a process and I think that’s what’s great about the movement that is beginning to emerge is that the crisis is so severe in terms of joblessness, violence and now ecological threats that people are willing to be both pragmatic and visionary. So the green economy will start off as a small subset and we are going to push it and push it and push it until it becomes the engine for transforming the whole society.
This is left-wing lingo, and a clear call for “transforming the whole society” to the original communist vision Jones obviously still believes in.
How could such a man get any White House appointment, especially one with a large budget and a strategy for social revolution as its goal? If George W. Bush had appointed a David Duke supporter who only four years earlier was a leader of a Klan offshoot, the Left would rightfully have yelled bloody murder until the appointee was dismissed.  One must also ask what happened to the traditional FBI vetting of one’s background, and the calling attention to it by the Bureau to the President, before the appointment was made.
Did Obama know of Jones’ views and associations? If not, why not? And if he did, why did he still appoint him? One wonders if Bill Ayers had not been the subject of so much attention before the election, whether he too would have been given a major appointment as an education czar?

HOT : Lance cpl. Joshua m. Bernard picture

Lance Cpl. Joshua Bernard was a great inclusion to US Marine as sources say, and most importantly will be remembered thus in future. AP published some of his photos which were sensitive enough as demanded by his father. So considering you know about the unfortunate incident already, (Lance Corporal Joshua M. Bernard: the real story)

Here are some photos from AP library.
